Eye Doctors Say Citrus Foods Are The Best For Overall Eye Health

New studies suggest that citrus foods are the absolute best for eye health. Ophthalmologists say the main reason citrus fruits are so great for the eyes is because they are rich in vitamin C.

Among other things, vitamin C helps prevent inflammation in the eyes. This is extremely helpful in warding off diseases like cataracts and glaucoma. More vitamin C could also help combat symptoms of dry eyes syndrome and digital eye strain.

Oranges are probably the best-known citrus fruit with high vitamin C content. A few other citrus fruits to consider incorporating into your diet include lemons and limes.

Believe it or not, just one glass of water with freshly squeezed lemon juice has 187 percent of your daily requirement for vitamin C. Lemons were hailed in ancient times by sailors for their ability to fight off vitamin C deficiency (aka scurvy).

Besides citrus fruits, it’s always a good idea to increase your vegetable intake for even more minerals and vitamins. A few veggies doctors recommend specifically for eye health include green peppers and broccoli.

Some other fruits that have been shown to be beneficial for eye health include blueberries and grapes. Blueberries have a high amount of antioxidants, which is great for reducing stress on the eyes. Grapes, on the other hand, help to strengthen the retinae from oxidative stress.

Due to the prevalence of computer screens, digital eye strain is becoming far more commonplace. This disorder has many of the same symptoms of dry eyes including itchy eyes, red eyes, and eye pain. It’s never been more important for citizens to take proactive measure to prevent serious eye diseases.

To avoid developing this disorder, eye doctors recommend employing the 20-20-20 rule. All you have to do is look 20 feet away from a digital screen every 20 minutes for 20 seconds. This will give your eyes the chance to naturally re-moisturize themselves.

Consuming citrus foods on a regular basis will do wonders for your eye health. Definitely consider stocking up on these vitamin-rich foods if you have any difficulties with your vision.
