Summer Tips for Eye Health

June is Cataracts Awarness Month, and the summer season can be difficult on the eyes. Due to the dry or overly humid air and long days that are filled with sun, it’s important to protect the eyes. The sun’s rays are at their strongest between 10 o’clock in the morning and 4 o’clock in the afternoon, so if you want to be outside enjoying the weather, here are some tips to keep in mind for the health of your eyes.

Health.com suggests following a healthy diet to protect your vision and the muscles in your eyes. Eating food that are rich in antioxidants like vitamins C and E can help protect your eyes from cataracts and macular degeneration. You can also keep your eyes functioning well by consuming foods that are high in lutein, omega-3 fatty acids and zinc. So, add more leafy greens to your diet, as well as nuts, eggs and fresh fruit.

UV protection will also shield your eyes from the harsh rays of the sun. Wear a wide brimmed hat if you’re going to be in the sun for long periods of time, and use sunglasses that have UV protection. It’s best to select sunglasses that protect your eyes from 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays.

It’s also important to be smoke-free during the summer (and all seasons) if you want to keep your eyes healthy. Cataracts is the leading reason for loss of vision in the U.S. and the most common cause of blindness in the world. Smoking has several negative impacts on your health, and smokers are more likely to have cataracts than those who don’t smoke. It’s also more likely for smokers to develop cataracts when they are younger, which means they suffer from vision problems considerably longer than others.
